Amniocentesis, Chorion villous sampling, Fetal blood sampling, In - Utero blood transfusion

Amniocentesis

collecting a small quantity of amniotic fluid by inserting a needle through the abdomen. The amniotic fluid contains fetal cells which will be analysed for various conditions.

Chorion villous sampling

collecting a small quantity of tissues from the placenta by passing a needle through the abdomen and analysing the tissue.

Fetal blood sampling

collecting blood from the baby for testing.

In - Utero blood transfusion

when the baby is anaemic specially processed blood is transfused by inserting a needle through the abdomen into fetal blood vessels.

Shunt procedures, Radiofrequency ablation, Fetoscopic laser coagulation, Fetal reduction

Shunt procedures

– involves placing a shunt tube to drain some fluid filled spaces like cysts in the lung, fluid surrounding the lung etc.

Radiofrequency ablation

– involves coagulating the cord in some twin pregnancies when problem in one twin is likely to affect the other twin.

Fetoscopic laser coagulation

– coagulating the communicating placental vessels in twins sharing a placenta and has developed a condition called twin twin transfusion syndrome. Done at Mediscan systems, Chennai.

Fetal reduction

– when a woman is carrying more than two babies the risk of preterm delivery is increased. To reduce this risk some medication is injected into the heart of the selected fetus so that we leave two fetuses behind.
