Autopsy and pathological studies:
Ultrasound can give fairly accurate diagnosis in most of the cases. Detailed autopsy of the fetus and placenta will be helpful in the following situation.
Confirmation of the diagnosis
Finding of additional malformations
Certain situation where ultrasound alone cannot make a definitive diagnosis (e.g.,) Lethal skeletal dysplasia, renal cystic disease
To evaluate the cause of unexplained intrauterine fetal demise, intrauterine growth restriction, non-immune hydrops.
With these information a fairly accurate diagnosis is possible which will help to predict the recurrence risk and to derive an action plan in the future pregnancies.
